Harry is a liar, cheat, bully, coward, braggart and comes to a bad end, being soundly defeated by the noble and clean living Tom Brown. ![]() In Tom Brown’s School Days, the British boy’s book by Thomas Hughes, the villain of the piece is Harry Flashman. While I like my heroes to be heroic as much as the next romance fan, I have a big soft spot in my heart for Flashy, but I’d never let him know it – he’d probably sell me into a harem or some such trick. Flashy is the worst sort of cad, as he would tell you himself, and never reforms. You can’t say that about Sir Harry Flashman, the protagonist of George MacDonald Fraser’s series of historical novels set during the height of the Victorian Empire. The main characters in those books may act the anti-hero at times, but they are ultimately true heroes. Many romance readers enjoy historical fiction like Dorothy Dunnett’s Lymond Chronicles and Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey Maturin series (both series were reviewed at AAR). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Attracted to the sight of the birds nesting in her backyard, the author follows them as they forage in the moss along neighborhood streets and cavort in a nearby wildlife preserve. While Darcy navigates the unfamiliar adult streets of the Big Apple, readers get to read the story that put her there. Interspersed between Darcy’s story is her first publishing attempt and the reason she is in New York City. Her story is an honest coming-of-age story as she graduates from teen to adult with all of the responsibilities and pressures that come with such a role. Darcy herself is likable but naive, determined to succeed in her writing as well as her bout of independence but emotionally unprepared to do so. Darcy experiences many firsts as her life unfolds in the city – her first author event, her first love interest, her first apartment, her first job, her first understanding of the grown-up world of paying rent. His initial success came from books with male protoganists, but also has written a novel with a female narrator in How To Be Good, as well as book with four different narrators, two male and two female, in A Long Way Down, quite successfully. I wasn’t sure at first what I thought about Hornby writing for young adults from the perspective of a teenager. The story, written from Sam’s point of view, is about Sam’s dealing with the fact he is soon to become a teenage father. Early in the story Sam meets Alicia, the two begin dating and shortly thereafter have sex and conceive a child. The novel is about Sam, a teenage skater (as in skateboarding) who seeks advice on life from Tony Hawk’s autobiography and talks to a poster of Hawk on his wall. ![]() |
